Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
