The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
