As he approaches his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is directly connected to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

Arteta was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. Yet, that early success remains his sole significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.

Present Challenges

Given that trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This comes notwithstanding Arteta managing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

He is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that success is required sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

The manager expanded, stressing the constant necessity to validate his position. “I think a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, praising the strong backing from the club's ownership, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the Everton match coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is anticipated to sideline him for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
