Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of characters who will branch out from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might look unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment demonstrate why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his own means, breaking into the secret base, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then settled his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the influential clan could assist the group reach areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the clan.

This means them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Fans can expect discovering which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on next week.
